A Tribute to a Seed Industry Pioneer: Remembering Simon Nanne Groot

Dear AFSTA Members,

It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of a true giant of the global seed industry, Simon Nanne Groot, who departed on July 6, 2025, at the age of 90. Simon, the visionary founder of East-West Seed, leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that has touched millions of lives, including many across our beloved African continent.

A 6th-generation seedsman, Simon’s dedication was rooted in a singular belief: that high-quality vegetable seeds and accompanying knowledge could uplift smallholder farmers from poverty. Through East-West Seed, which he founded in the Philippines in 1982, he pioneered the development of robust, high-yielding hybrid vegetable varieties perfectly suited for tropical climates. His holistic approach, which included training over 150,000 farmers annually in best agricultural practices, significantly boosted farmer incomes and improved access to nutritious food across Asia, Latin America, and importantly, Africa.

We recognize Simon’s indelible impact within our own community. East-West Seed is a valued Associate Member of the African Seed Trade Association (AFSTA), a testament to its commitment to strengthening the seed sector in Africa. Simon’s pioneering spirit and East-West Seed’s active participation, including its leadership contributing to discussions at AFSTA Congresses, have profoundly influenced our collective efforts to ensure African farmers have access to the best planting materials.

Simon’s groundbreaking work earned him the prestigious World Food Prize in 2019, a well-deserved recognition of his decades-long pursuit of agricultural transformation. His contributions transcended business, fostering sustainable development and food security on a global scale.

As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life dedicated to service, innovation, and empowerment. Simon Nanne Groot’s vision will continue to inspire and shape the future of seed trade and agricultural prosperity in Africa and beyond. He will be fondly remembered by many who had the privilege of interacting with his company and seeing the fruits of his labor.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Groot family, East-West Seed, and all who were inspired by Simon’s remarkable journey.
